Carolyn Megill

Meet the Artist

Contemporary abstract and figurative painter Carolyn Megill was born in Tokyo, Japan, and spent her formative years on the northern island of Hokkaido. This experience was to have a lasting impression on her. Learning to speak Japanese as well as English and being immersed in Japanese culture at such an early age gave Carolyn a unique insight into the rich Japanese heritage.

Carolyn returned to Canada to attend The Ontario College of Art (OCAD) and graduated with honours in 1974. Since that time, she has been showing her work in Toronto and other Ontario cities as well as in Quebec. Her work can be found in collections across Canada, Germany, France and Australia. Carolyn spent many years as an art instructor with the Toronto school board teaching all ages in various enrichment programs and as a visiting artist. She has undertaken private instruction for individuals and has held workshops for adults in her studio.

Between 2002 and 2009 Carolyn organized local art festivals in her Toronto community of Riverdale and curated several group art shows including Nuit Blanche in the Distillery District.

At the end of 2014 Carolyn moved her studio to the stunning Northumberland Hills in south eastern Ontario.

One of her greatest joys is to enter her beautifully lit studio every day and begin the process of exploring her inner journey. Carolyn’s improvisational approach at the start of each piece allows her subconscious self to steer her through uncharted waters as she applies layers of paint then plies her signature “sgraffito” technique to illuminate the layers beneath.

Her daily mantra is "get out of your own way and let the island come to you". The mystery of each piece is allowed to unfold in its own time, keeping the process fresh and the experience magical for both artist and viewer.
